Part 2: Voortrekker Monument.

For the next part of the journey, we flew to Johannesburg and took a bus to Pretoria. On the way, we stop at the Voortrekker Monument, recognizing the Dutch influence in the area.

"Voortrekker" is a Dutch and Afrikaans word meaning pioneer or pathfinder (literally "forward trekker").
We ate a Dutch-inspired lunch in this room with a variety of sculptures.
On the grounds are various artifacts related to Dutch settling and migration.

The main building is surrounded by this stone fence, carved to look like circling the wagons.

All four walls are covered by these carvings, depicting the history of the Dutch settling of Africa.
The walls are these geometric patterns, and the center is open to a lower level.
Down on the lower level, there is a museum of Dutch artifacts.
