Here's "two dollar" Darrolyn late for the bus again.
The tower in the background on the left is currently the highest one
in Shanghai, until the one on the right is finished being built.
We could have taken the Yangtze river all the way to Shanghai, but it
would have taken quite a long time. Here we are on the Bund. The section
across is the "new city" part that has all been built in the
last twenty years; they now have several bridges and tunnels connecting
the two sides. This structure is a television tower.
Looking down the river the other direction. Shanghai is high-rises wherever
you look, having over 4,000 buildings over 24 stories.
On this side of the river is the old section of the Bund, with buildings
from the 1800's and 1900's in the European style from when it was the
English concession, the French concession, etc. The tall building in the
background is the Marriott, and the top is supposed to be in the shape
of the magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai.
We went to the only Chinatown in China, where we did all the low-end
shopping.
This is the teahouse where Clinton visited.
Doesn't that sound yummy?
An accidental shot of the old teahouse, and on the right is the new tallest
building.
We had lunch on the dragon boat. We didn't actually set sail, but this
boat is used for parties and weddings.
A shot from our hotel window, showing one of the few large park areas
in Shanghai. Note the McDonald's and Pizza Hut on the bottom right; this
is where we had to get our Big Mac fix.
After visiting the silk factory, Darrolyn and Hans and Paul dressed in
native garb for the farewell dinner.
A night shot of Shanghai.
That night there was a total eclipse of the moon, but my camera will
not do it justice.
The morning commute in Shanghai in the rain.
We took the maglev train to the new airport.
You can barely make out that it reached 431 Km/H.
