On the bus touring around Beijing, we see the new Olympic stadium, nicknamed "The Bird Cage". This is a steel structure built around the actual stadium.
Our first shopping trip was the jade factory, where Kimberly found her avatar the lion.
We get a presentation about jade in the shop, while our tour guide Dino looks on in the background.
Kimberly bought some jade jewelry, but you'll have to see that on her. Then we go off to the Ming tombs. The complex is huge, and it takes us a half hour just to walk through this section.
Heather and the group strolling through the main gate.
Here's the six of us posing in front of one of the guardian statues.
A shot up the boulevard, showing you just how long it is. There are ten pairs of these statues up the boulevard.
Hans and his horse.
Kimberly and the lion again. She has to quit kissing foreign animals.
At the end of the boulevard is this tomb.
Inside the tomb is this statue.
This is Dino at the gate on the other side of the tomb. Thank goodness they had an entrance on each side of the tomb so we didn't have to walk all the way back.
Then on the cloisonne factory for more shopping.
Our first big stop: The Great Wall. Here's Heather making her was up the through the shops toward the wall.
And Kimberly in front of what would later be called "The Gauntlet" as we make our way down. We don't have a sound file, so you will have to imagine all the shopkeepers shouting, "One dollar!" "Hello!" "English map!"
If you don't go up to the shops, they will come to you.
Kimberly and Betsy waiting to get on the cable car.
Our first view of the wall from the cable car.
Heather and Betsy on the cable car.
The wall to the west, from the meeting patio.
Kimberly and Wade with the wall to the west.
The wall extending off to the east. The pictures cannot do the wall justice; of course seeing it live cannot do it justice since we are only seeing a couple of miles of it.
Hiking around on the wall.
Darrolyn and her Coolie hat.
Five sweat-pigs.
Inside one of the command center buildings on the wall. At least it is shady here. Do I have hat head?
If you walk down about a half mile, you can take the chair lift back down.
Wade started to walk down, but then thought better of it.
Dinner that night. A typical setup with everything on a lazy Susan.
We got to dinner late that night, and they were already setting up for a wedding the next day. The sign in the background says "Wedding," and all of the chairs are covered with red cloth and huge pink bows.
