The dam from the
upstream side.
As you approach from upstream, the lock system is on the left. At the
left of picture are the moorings for the boats waiting their turn in the
locks.
The upstream entrance of the locks. The water hasn't been completely
raised, so we pass through the first one, and only have to use locks two
through five.
Wade watching off the back of the boat as the gates close behind us.
After one night in the normal accommodations with a bunk as hard as wood,
Hans decides to upgrade to the Presidential Suite, which includes its
own balcony on the front of the ship.
After the locks, we get off the ship for a quick bus ride to the dam
observation point.
These large cranes on top are used for pulling up giant concrete slabs
to open the spill gates.
A millipede.
This picture shows the project during construction. The island in the
center was the main reason for selecting this site. They diverted the
water around one side while they built the other, then switched back.
In this shot, upstream is to the left, and the locks are at the top of
the island.
It's not impressive like Hoover Dam, because it is not very high, but
it sure is wide (around 1.4 miles).
