We head to Ragusa, but becuase of the timing, the only place that we
can stop for lunch that can handle a bus-full of people is this truck
stop.
Inside, we split a ham-and-cheese sandwich, that had peas on it for some
reason. In the center with the satchel is our tour director Brad.
Walking around Ragusa at the B-Side store.
Our hotel.
We take an optional tour down to Ragusa Ibla, a Unesco world heritage
site.
This is another hill-top town: up the hill, down the hill, up the hill,
down the hill...
The side entrance to the Church of St. George.
Through a lovely old park that is surrounded by five main churches.
The sundial on this church shows the time is just before "22".
Note that the 24-hour calendar was Islamic in origin, so the day begins
and ends at sunset, so the "22" means there are about two hours
to sunset.
The Church of St. Benedict. There are a small number of nuns left in
the cloisters here, continuing their all-day devotions. The numbers are
dwindling, as today you have to have a calling to be a nun. For centuries,
the second-born child was given to the church to be a priest or nun.
St. Benedict himself.
Cathedral of San Giorgio, built in the baroque style...
...with steps added in the front so you know you're closer to God when
you are in it.
We went out for dinner in Ragusa. Ignore the guy in the foreground; this
is a picture of the demonstration coming down the street in the background.
