Day 10 -- To Verona, Serego Alighieri Winery, Garda Lago cruise, Alleria restaurant.
We travel to Verona, but stop at Villa Serego Alighieri. This vineyard dates back to when it was bought by Dante Alighieri's son in the 14th century.
Vineyards as far as the eye can see.
The rose bushes planted at the end of the rows are an early warning system for disease and other problems.
Wade at the winery.
The grapes here are picked and put in racks in the drying room to concentrate their flavor.
We were promised a "light lunch" and they put out quite a spread.
We sample three of their wines, including one for appetizers, mains, and dessert. For dessert, they serve crispy almond cookies that are perfect with the dessert wine.
The day-drinking couple with plates of bread, vegetables, and more. Not shown: the obligatory meats and cheeses.
The three wines we sampled.
Our hotel is actually outside of town, and is its own winery. They don't have a lot of standard hotel amenities, like porterage, so they have to send out some cars to pick up the bags.
Walking up the driveway.
The front entrance to Dimora Buglioni.
The patio area is lovely, and perfect for sitting out and having a glass of wine.
That afternoon, Carla has arranged an impromptu trip to Garda Lake. We all hop on this little boat...
...and set off around the peninsula that extends into the lake.
Back toward the city of Sirmione on the peninsula.
Obviously, this is the high rent district. This is Maria Callas' house. It's the little one; it only has 20 rooms.
These ruins date back to the Holy Roman empire.
They overlook a sand beach where people are playing.
The tour takes us around this old castle.
We slip through some openings to shortcut back to the other side.
"Lower the drawbridge!"
Our boat returns.
That evening, we had a delightful meal in Sirmione at Ristorante Alleria.
We are sitting right on the water.
We are sitting so close that I can look off to the left of my chair at these fish in the shallows.
Garda Lake is the largest Italian lake, and extends north into this pass.
For our first couse, we select a linguine with crab. The waiter split it for us, but that only meant we each got half of a crab on top of our linguine.
I should have know to expect that, after seeing these crabs in the main restaurant. I really wasn't expecting to get a crab with a nutcracker and poker.
Yet another nice bottle of wine.
Wade got the ombrina (croaker fish) with purple potato chips.
Kimberly got an entrecote (ribeye) steak with parmesan cheese fondue and new potatoes.
We decided that we had not met our french fry quota since coming to Italy.
Off to the side there was a small pier. We tried to get a picture of the lights on the opposite side.
We ate and watched the sun go down and the moon rise over the lake.
