The beautiful island of Capri, where the jet set go to play:
The town of Capri, as seen from the Funicalar station on the top:
Us in front of the two rocks that are landmarks in the bay:
Mount Vesuvius. From the double-peak about a third from the left to the smaller peak right of center, this all used to go up to a single peak. Visualize the part that is missing; that is what blew off and landed on Pompeii:
On the streets of Pompeii, looking into some shops:
In one of the temples in Pompeii:
Kimberly in that same temple:
The main square in the city:
Across from the main square. This whole area used to be covered with the white tiles you see on the right side.
Some of the artifacts that have been unearthed. This is a small sampling; most of the artifacts are in museums around the world:
The white figure in the case is a plaster cast of a dog that was killed when the city was suffocated. You can still see the marks of the collar where it was chained up. On the left is a pig that was also killed in the eruption:
The plaster cast of a main trying to cover his face from the smoke:
The public bathrooms of Pompeii. Picture boards in the slots between these stones, with holes cut for humans. Note that these are nicer than most of the bathrooms in Italy today:
Kimberly as a barmaid in one of the taverns:
A section of the largest "house" in the city. It was over an acre large. This is just the entryway with the welcoming fountain and the atrium.
In that same house, a mosaic floor and some frescoes on the wall:
An archway to one of the garden areas:L
On the streets of Pompeii. The stones are so you don't have to step all the way down to cross from one side to the other. They are spaced so a two-horse chariot can go by, with one horse and one wheel on each side of the stepping stones. The larger streets are two chariots wide.
Our Pompeii tour guide, Antonio, showing a well inside a house:
Still inside the same house, one of the bedrooms:
One of the streets that is two chariots wide. The excavation of the city goes on for blocks in the distance:
A bakery with the mill stones and the ovens:
Another wall with some frescoes:
